Golf enthusiasts throughout the Eternal City and Italy, both expat and native, were delighted to hear the much-anticipated announcement that the world’s most prestigious golf tournament would be heading to Rome in 2022! The Ryder Cup, where the finest players Europe and the USA pit their wits and wills against each other for continental glory and bragging rights!
At the time of writing (November 2018) the trophy is safely in the possession of the European team after a thrilling and thoroughly-deserved victory this autumn, with the cherry on the cake for many being the integral role that Italy’s very own Francesco Molinari played in bringing the Ryder Cup home this year. Although not quite making the winning putt himself, it was the American Phil Mickelson who conceded defeat to the Italian to hand Ryder Cup glory to the Europeans.
Marco Simone Golf Club is probably the most prestigious in the region and arguably Italy too - even more so thanks to its selection as the 2022 venue - and has long been a favourite of the golfing community in the higher echelons of Rome society. Just a 30-40 minute drive (depending on which part of the city you’re coming from), the course occupies part of a stupendous nature reserve that straddles the city’s green belt and you can actually see the magnificent dome of St Peter’s Basilica from the golf course!
Our pick of accommodations has to go to the 4-star Hotel Kolbe located by the Colosseum and Roman Forums in the heart of Rome’s historical centre. First off the mark in gearing up for this tournament as well as next year’s Six Nations, the Kolbe is offering some delicious hospitality packages which include transfers to and from the Marco Simone Country Club, green fee, golf kit bag with three Titleist golf balls, bag of tees and other surprise gadgets!
